Gasoline and diesel pickup trucks at or under 14,000 lbs GVWR require California smog inspection on the same biennial cycle as passenger cars. Vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR are regulated separately by CARB's heavy-duty truck inspection program.
- Most consumer pickup trucks (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, Tacoma, Tundra) fall well under the 14,000 lb cutoff and require standard smog
- Heavy-duty trucks (F-250/350, Ram 2500/3500, Silverado 2500/3500 HD) vary: some configurations exceed 14,000 lbs and are exempt from the standard smog program
- Lifted suspensions, aftermarket wheels, or body modifications do NOT affect smog requirement — GVWR stamped on door jamb is the governing figure
- Diesel HD trucks under 14,000 lbs GVWR get the full diesel smog inspection including DPF, EGR, DEF visual check
- Towing capacity and payload upgrades do not change the GVWR classification for smog purposes
