- N54 twin-turbo (335i, 535i, 135i, Z4 35i, 2007-2013): charge pipe failures cause boost leaks that trigger lean-condition OBD codes; VANOS solenoid faults cause timing codes; oil consumption affects O2 sensor accuracy
- N55 single-turbo (2010-2015): fewer charge pipe issues than N54; VANOS solenoid wear and valve cover gasket oil leaks are the primary smog risk on high-mileage examples
- N52 naturally-aspirated (E90/E92/E60 2006-2011): generally reliable; EVAP system and cooling fan faults are the watch points
- B58 turbocharged (G-body 3/5/7 Series, X3/X5 2016+): significantly improved reliability; few documented systemic smog concerns
- BMW diesel (X5 3.0d, 535d): subject to full diesel smog inspection — AdBlue/DEF system must be intact; no tampering with SCR or DPF
- European OBD implementation on BMW can report additional monitors beyond the standard U.S. set — test-ready confirmation requires all monitors complete
