Volvo vehicles pass California smog reliably. Drive-E 2.0L turbocharged and supercharged engines (T5, T6, T8) are the current platform — they have a strong emissions compliance record, with EVAP system sensitivity and moderate direct-injection carbon buildup being the primary watch points.
- Drive-E T5 (2.0L turbocharged, XC60, S60, V60, XC40): reliable emissions record; EVAP purge valve aging causes P0441 on older examples
- Drive-E T6 (2.0L turbo + supercharged, XC90, XC60 B6, S90): strong compliance; oil consumption on very high-mileage examples can affect O2 sensor accuracy
- T8 Recharge PHEV (XC60 T8, XC90 T8, S90 T8): not exempt from smog — full OBD-II inspection; must drive 30+ miles in combustion mode before testing
- C30/C70/S40/V50/XC70 with 5-cylinder engine (pre-2015): older EVAP designs are leak-sensitive; P0442 small leaks are the most common smog issue on this generation
- Volvo EX30 and EX90 (BEV): fully exempt from emissions testing — no inspection required
- European OBD implementation on Volvo can report additional monitors; all monitors must be complete
