Does an RV or motorhome need a smog check in California?

It depends on the class: Class B and Class C motorhomes at or under 14,000 lbs GVWR follow standard smog rules. Class A motorhomes are generally exempt. Travel trailers and fifth wheels have no engine and are never smog-tested.

• Class B motorhomes (van conversions: Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit base) — typically under 14,000 lbs, smog required
• Class C motorhomes (cab-forward on truck chassis) — most are under 14,000 lbs, smog required
• Class A motorhomes (full bus-style) — typically over 14,000 lbs GVWR, exempt from standard smog program
• Travel trailers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers — no engine, no smog ever
• Diesel Class B and C RVs under 14,000 lbs get the full diesel smog inspection (DPF, EGR, DEF visual)
• Check the door-jamb GVWR sticker — the stamped rating governs, not the actual vehicle weight
